Mason Bee House
Give a present to both a little bee and a human at the same time with our boxes that will jazz up your garden while also providing habitat for our native bees to lay their eggs. Nothing beats garden art that's also functional!
Typically Available in Green, Purple, and Blue. Please let me know what color you'd like!
Slightly smaller than honeybees, mason bees are peaceful and amazing pollinators visiting as many as 1000 blooms per day. Females lay eggs in the hollow tubes and seal them up with some mud. Other beneficial insects will also likely take up residence in the houses ( like leaf-cutter bees and mason wasps) and even birds will pop in and use the straw to make their nests.
These are awesome for kids to observe nature since solitary bees like mason bees, mason wasps, and leafcutter bees will never sting to defend their homes. Get right up close and check our their handiwork.
I find that placement doesn't matter all that much but if you can find a spot that receives morning sun, the bees will warm up from chilly nights and start their day sooner. Mount them via the small hole drilled in the back or place them on a table. Once you decide on a spot though, as soon as you start seeing insect activity they should be left in place so the mama bees can find their homes!
Included in the pictures are some of my older boxes so you can see what some of the bee activity looks like.
About my boxes:
My boxes are made out of non-treated pine so the developing larvae aren't harmed by any chemicals. I paint the exteriors with high quality exterior paint so they'll keep looking great through all types of weather.
